HOW DOES PCOS AFFECT WOMEN’S FERTILITY

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, commonly known as PCOS, has a major impact on women’s fertility. It is characterised by various symptoms and hormonal imbalances. Mentioned below are ways in which PCOS affects women’s fertility:

Irregular Menstrual Cycle: Women suffering from PCOS experience irregular menstrual cycles. This makes it challenging to predict when a woman is most fertile, which in turn, minimises the chance of conception.

Hormonal Imbalance: PCOS is marked by higher levels of androgen and insulin resistance. This can disrupt the normal working of the ovaries which affects the release of eggs, thereby, negatively impacting fertility.

Ovarian Cysts: Women suffering from PCOS have small cysts on their ovary which can cause hormonal imbalance and irregular menstrual cycle.

Insulin Resistance: This issue is common with women suffering from PCOS. High insulin levels affect the functions of the ovary and can lead to excess androgen. This can interfere with ovulation and fertility.

Obesity Risk: Obesity is commonly observed among women suffering from PCOS. Hormonal imbalance and insulin resistance can also be affected further due to this issue.

Endometrial Issues: Women suffering from PCOS also have a higher risk of endometrial hyperplasia as a result of irregular menstruation. This negatively affects the implantation of fertilised eggs and the pregnancy process as a whole.

  • Some common symptoms of PCOS are:
  • Abnormal hair growth
  • Weight gain
  • Thinning of hair on the head
  • Depression
  • Increased skin tag
  • Those suffering from PCOS have a greater risk of suffering from the following ailments:
  • High cholesterol
  • High blood pressure
  • Heart disease
  • Diabetes
  • Sleeping disorder
  • Anxiety/Depression
  • While there are no specific tests to diagnose PCOS, healthcare professionals will determine the examination process based on the case. Some of the tests include:
  • Physical test
  • Blood test
  • Medical history
  • Ultrasound scan

Please note that the issues experienced from one person to another may vary based on their medical history and physical condition. Some may struggle while others may get pregnant with relative ease. Patients are advised to consult a fertility specialist about the best course of action to improve their chances of pregnancy.
